A bloody nose is rarely life threatening.  However, a bloody nose might indicate a more serious condition.  Always report to the nurse.

• Have client lean forward, NOT back

• Pinch nose and hold for 5 minutes

• If bleeding does not stop, pinch nose and hold for 10 minutes

• Do not let client blow their nose after bleeding stops

• If bleeding doesn’t stop after the 3rd attempt, see the doctor

• If client feels lightheaded, dizzy, or weak, or if the nosebleed is the result of trauma, call 911
